Four men have pleaded guilty to destroying four Jewish community ambulances in an arson attack in Golders Green on 23 March. The incident caused approximately £1m of damage and occurred during a wave of antisemitic incidents in north-west London.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) demonstrated its response capabilities for marauding terrorist attacks at Finchley Fire Station. Members of the London Assembly Fire Committee attended the demonstration to review emergency preparedness and response protocols. LFB borough commander Rob Davis stated that London faces a constantly evolving security environment with new methods of attack. The training aims to ensure firefighters understand protocols from start to finish, prioritising their safety and the recovery of injured individuals. This capability was initially developed following the 2017 Manchester Arena attack.

Dave Rich, director of policy at the Community Security Trust, noted the necessity of preparing for potential future attacks, citing a long-standing pattern of hate crime targeting the Jewish community. He reported an astronomical increase in security requests, approximately double the previous level. Mr Rich praised the LFB's response to the arson attacks and its engagement with community organisations, highlighting the reassurance provided to a community that felt vulnerable.

Golders Green memorial fire: Man admits arson

Ali Fallahi pleaded guilty to setting fire to a cabinet near a memorial wall in Limes Avenue.

The four men who pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey are Hamza Iqbal, 20, Rehan Khan, 19, Judex Atshatshi, 18, and Saif Ali, 18. They admitted to destroying or damaging property recklessly as to whether life would be endangered. Prosecutors indicated the incident was believed to be a targeted attack against the Jewish community. Sentencing for these four is awaiting the outcome of the trial of a fifth man, Subhan Ahmed, who denies assisting an offender.

Yanky David, a responder for Hatzola NW London, described the attack on ambulances as frightening, given their life-saving role, and stated it could have had catastrophic consequences for residents. He expressed reassurance that emergency services are prepared. The London Ambulance Service provided three replacement ambulances the day after the attack, enabling Hatzola to continue its work. Mr David also noted increased police patrols in the area, but acknowledged that the arson attacks remain a source of pain for the community.

Hina Bokhary, deputy chair of the London Assembly Fire Committee, commented on the current climate of rising hate crime affecting various community groups in London, including antisemitism and Islamophobia.
