Former Christ’s College teacher denies eight indecent assault charges in Finchley trial

A former teacher at Christ’s College Finchley is standing trial for eight counts of indecent assault against two of her former pupils. Sally-Anne Bowen, 65, taught at the school between 1986 and 1988. The alleged offences involve two boys, both aged 14 at the time, and are said to have taken place during and after the school day.

The trial, which began earlier this month, is being heard at Southwark Crown Court. Bowen denies all charges. Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe KC told the jury the case hinges on whether Bowen exploited her position of trust, regardless of whether the boys appeared willing or flattered by her attention.

Allegations of grooming and sexual abuse

The court heard that Bowen’s relationship with the main complainant allegedly began with lunchtime meetings at a local café. The prosecution claims these encounters escalated to a sexual relationship, largely conducted at Bowen’s flat. The complainant told police the pair had sex "20 or 30 times" during the 1988 school year.

In a 2020 police interview, the same complainant described being taught by Bowen how to urinate inside her, a sexual practice he said he did not recognise as unusual at the time. He told police, "My introduction into the sexual world was completely governed by Sally-Anne Bowen." He admitted being a willing participant, saying, "I loved that woman. I would have done anything for her."

The prosecution alleges the relationship was an open secret at the school. The court heard that Bowen took her pupil to end-of-year staff drinks, where a colleague reportedly said she hoped the boy would "get home safely." The boy’s mother later confronted Bowen by phone and sent her son to stay with his older sister in Manchester to end the contact. The sister testified that Bowen continued calling her brother until she intervened.

Defence disputes allegations

Bowen denies any sexual contact with either boy. Her defence barrister, Mark Kimsey KC, has argued that the accounts of a relationship are fabricated. Bowen told police any such claims were "fantasy."

The defence has pointed to a medical condition Bowen says made intercourse extremely painful during the period in question. However, the main complainant rejected this claim in court, telling the jury, "It was not a problem for her."

The trial has also heard of a separate incident in which Bowen reported one of her accusers to police for allegedly threatening to rape her. The allegation followed comments the man made in a 2025 interview for *The Observer*’s podcast *Lucky Boy*. Kimsey KC quoted the man saying he might want to "hug her… kiss her… fuck her" if given the chance to speak to Bowen again.

The complainant told the court his words had been taken out of context. He said he had also stated, "I might just want to cry. How about that? How fucked up’s that?" He accused the defence of "two-bit, second-rate legal work."

Second complainant’s testimony expected

A second complainant is expected to give evidence this week. The prosecution alleges Bowen encouraged kissing and touching during café lunches, with other boys present. The trial continues, with no date yet set for its conclusion.
