Barnet's recycling centre: what you can take to Summers Lane, and the rules that catch people out

Barnet's reuse and recycling centre at Summers Lane in North Finchley is where household waste goes when it will not fit in a bin. Most of the frustration it generates comes from three things people discover at the gate rather than before setting off.

Check the booking system first

Many London boroughs, Barnet included, have moved to booked slots for the tip, introduced during the pandemic and retained since to manage queues. Whether a booking is required, and how far ahead slots run out, changes — so check the council's recycling centre page before travelling, particularly at weekends and bank holidays when demand peaks.

Your vehicle decides whether you get in

This is the rule that turns most people away. Cars are generally fine. Vans, pickups, trailers and vehicles with commercial signage require a permit issued in advance, because the site is for household waste and the restriction exists to stop trade waste being disposed of free.

Borrowing a friend's van for a single trip does not exempt you. Apply for the permit first, and allow time for it to be issued.

You will also be asked to prove you live in the borough. A driving licence or a recent council tax or utility bill showing a Barnet address is the usual evidence.

What it takes

The centre handles the ordinary run of household material: garden waste, wood, rubble and hardcore, scrap metal, cardboard and paper, glass, textiles, furniture and mattresses, large and small electrical appliances, batteries, engine oil, and paint.

Fridges, freezers and televisions are accepted but handled separately, because they contain materials that must be removed under environmental rules before the rest can be processed. Expect to be directed to a specific bay rather than the general containers.

What it will not take

Asbestos is the significant one. It is not accepted at the household centre and must be handled by a licensed contractor — do not break it up or bag it yourself.

Commercial and trade waste is refused, as are large quantities of construction material from professional work at a property. Clinical waste, ammunition and explosives are also excluded, and there are limits on tyres and on gas cylinders.

Alternatives worth considering first

Barnet runs a chargeable bulky waste collection for furniture and appliances, which is often easier than a trip if you have no suitable vehicle.

For anything still usable, reuse beats recycling. Local charity shops, furniture reuse schemes and community groups will take serviceable furniture and appliances, and several will collect. The centre itself operates a reuse area for items in good condition.

Whatever you do, do not leave items on the pavement. Fly-tipping carries a fixed penalty and, on prosecution, an unlimited fine — and the council does pursue it.
