Collection days in Barnet are set by round, not by area, so two streets a few minutes apart can be collected on different days. The council publishes a postcode lookup that returns your specific dates, and it is the only reliable source — neighbours further down the hill may genuinely be on a different schedule.

Dates also shift around Christmas and bank holidays, usually by a day. Those revised schedules are published in advance on the same page.

Crews will not empty a recycling bin that is contaminated, and the definition is stricter than most people expect. The recurring problems are food-soiled cardboard such as greasy pizza boxes, plastic bags and bagged recycling, textiles, and nappies.

Two other rules cause most of the remainder: bins presented after the crew has passed, and lids that will not close. An overfilled bin is a spillage risk on the lorry and will usually be left.

The practical habit that avoids nearly all of this is putting containers out the night before, and rinsing anything that held food.

Garden waste is separate — and paid for

Garden waste collection in Barnet is a subscription service. It is not covered by your council tax, and it does not start automatically when spring arrives. Households that have not subscribed will find garden waste simply left.

The subscription runs for a fixed period and the charge is set annually, so check the current price and renewal date on the council’s garden waste pages before assuming last year’s arrangement still stands.

Bulky items and the tip

Furniture, mattresses and large appliances are not collected with household waste. Barnet runs a chargeable bulky waste collection, and the borough’s reuse and recycling centre at Summers Lane in North Finchley takes most household materials.

The centre operates a booking system and vehicle restrictions that catch people out — vans and larger vehicles need a permit. Check both before loading the car.

Reporting a missed collection

There is a reporting window, typically counted in working days from your scheduled collection. Report inside it and the round returns for you. Report outside it and you will normally be told to wait for the next scheduled collection.

Before reporting, check that the bin was out in time and that nothing on the contamination list is inside. A collection refused on those grounds is recorded as a valid non-collection, not a miss, and reporting it will not bring anyone back.
