Edgware Retailers See Sales Stagnate in August

Retailers in Edgware and across the UK experienced a disappointing August as consumers tightened their belts in anticipation of further increases in household bills. Total retail sales across the nation saw a year-on-year increase of just 0.7%, a considerable slowdown from the 3.1% growth recorded in August of the previous year. This figure also fell below the 12-month average growth rate of 1.6%.

Within the overall figures, food sales showed a year-on-year increase of 2.6%. However, this growth was less pronounced than the 4.7% rise seen in August last year and was below the 12-month average of 3.2%. In contrast, non-food sales recorded a decrease of 0.8% compared to the previous year. This decline was against a backdrop of 1.8% growth in non-food sales in August 2022 and a 12-month average growth of 0.2%.

Harvir Dhillon, lead economist at the British Retail Consortium, described August as a disappointing month for the sector. He noted that while some food categories saw growth, the overall performance was below the yearly average. Dhillon attributed the slowdown to shoppers reining in their spending due to rising household bills, particularly impacting discretionary purchases like furniture and appliances. Consumers instead opted for smaller luxuries in health and beauty sectors.

Separate data from Barclays indicated that consumer card spending grew by 2.1% year-on-year in August, a slight increase from July's 2% growth. Consumer confidence in their household finances also saw an improvement, reaching 66% in August, up from 64% in July. A higher proportion of consumers, 71%, reported feeling confident in their ability to manage their finances within their means, compared to 69% in the previous month.

Despite these improvements in confidence, a significant majority of consumers, 84%, expressed concern about rising prices. Jack Meaning, chief UK economist at Barclays, stated that consumer spending and confidence remained resilient in August, even as geopolitical events began to influence prices. He suggested that consumers could likely manage the anticipated short-term inflation. However, Meaning cautioned that persistent or intensifying global tensions could lead to households becoming more cautious with their spending in the future.
